Up on the Downs

When you and I walk on the Downs tonight,

let’s let our hearts and tongues (and dog) run free,

let’s look at things that lurk just out of sight,

and give a name to what it is we see.

Let’s walk on, hand in hand, until we reach

the Gorge, and gaze into the nothingness,

then look upstream and notice how the bridge

makes easy work of spanning the abyss.

Let’s head home via the looming water tower,

and not avoid the shadow that it casts,

or be alarmed by daylight’s fading power,

reminding us that nothing ever lasts.

This evening, after all these years together,

let’s go up to the Downs and meet each other.
