Some lives we might have led

We lived in Finland for a few years once,

I worked in telecoms.

You were a serial entrepreneur

with three successful start-ups to your name.

In my late 40s, I became serious about squash

and rose to number six in the under-50 rankings.

We fostered nine children and did our best

to give them a good start in life

(we decided not to have kids of our own).

We ran a B&B, in Wales.

In 1983 I unfortunately embezzled a large sum

and served three years mostly in an open prison.

We holidayed regularly in Azerbaijan

finding the people friendly and

the food and climate to our taste.

(One year, instead, we tried Kyrgyzstan

but weren’t tempted to repeat the experiment.)

You bred Shi Tzus, and took third place at Crufts.

We thought we might be happier in

an open relationship, but quickly found we weren’t.

Neither of us, sadly, survived a freak accident

involving a jar of peanut butter which took

place in the early 2000s.
